Jersey City is in Hudson County, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from Manhattan. It became an independent municipality in 1838. Downtown, the Heights, Journal Square and Bergen-Lafayette are distinct starting points. Liberty State Park and Liberty Science Center are local destinations. PATH and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail are different rail systems; check their operators. Read the historical account.

Lenape homeland and colonial settlement
The area’s history begins with Lenape communities. Dutch colonization and later urban development transformed the waterfront and inland settlements.

A municipal charter
The City of Jersey received a charter while still part of Bergen Township.
